How to choose the right brow product

Consider your brow type and the finish you want when selecting a product and remember that they often complements eachother, for example the pencil create hair-like strokes and the gel sets your brows for a long-lasting hold.

Brow Mapping

Brow mapping is a technique used to define the shape of the eyebrows based on the natural features of your face. It involves marking key points on the eyebrow using measurements that correspond to the eyes, nose and overall facial structure. These points help determine where the brow should begin, curve and end, creating a balanced and flattering shape for your face.

How to find your brow shape

If you want to try 'brow mapping' at home, there is a simple method to get started. First, take an angled brush and hold it vertically along your nose. This will mark where your eyebrows should start and ensure they are not too close or too far apart. Then angle the brush from the corner of your nose towards the outer corner of your eye. Where the brush meets your brow is where it should end. This will help you map out the length of your eyebrow for a balanced look.

How to choose the right shade

A golden rule is to always go for a lighter shade, this helps to avoid brows looking to harsh or to to dominant. Swatch the back of your hand to check the undertone of the pencil.

For dark-black hair, use a dark brunette pencil instead of black. For deeper skin tones, you can use a black eyebrow pencil lightly over a brunette shadow or pencil to make it look more defined but not harsh. Experiment with deep brown and black pencils to find  what shade looks best on you.

For medium brown hair, stick with softer browns for a soft and natural look.  Stay within a shade range that is one or two shades from your hair color. Choose a pencil that has the same undertone as your hair.

For blonde hair, for warmer or golden blondes – choose a warm undertone so the color doesn't look to ashy. If your blonde hair has a cool undertone, taupe is an ideal shade.

For red hair, go for red warm tones or caramel tones.

For grey hair, most taupe or light ash brown brow pencils will make eyebrows look natural.

Should my eyebrow pencil be darker or lighter?

It’s generally recommended to choose a brow pencil that is one to two shades lighter than your hair color for a softer, more natural look.

How to use eyebrow pencil on thin or sparse brows

To fill in thin brows, use short, light strokes to mimic natural brow hairs. Concentrate on sparse areas and blend for a seamless finish.

How to fill in brows for a natural look

Use a pencil or micro pencil to create light, hair-like strokes. Finish with a clear or tinted brow gel to set the shape and add volume without looking too heavy. If your application is too heavy, your brows won't look realistic. Add the color gradually if you like a darker brow. When you've finished applying, brush through eyebrows with the spoolie on the end of the pencil to soften the look and brush hairs in place.

Why use brow gel?

Brow gel locks your brow hairs in place and can add texture or color. Clear gel keeps brows looking natural without adding color, while tinted gel gives extra fullness and depth.

Why use tinted brow gel?

Tinted brow gel enhances your natural brow color while filling in sparse areas. It’s great for those who want fuller-looking brows without using too much product.
